MAMMOTH — Garland Speight stood cliffside, listening to a mechanical whir echoing around a canyon that could one day become a sprawling open pit copper mine.
“It might sound faint from up here,” he said, looking over the edge far below where drill rigs tunnel into the rock. “But those noises can disturb wildlife.”
