$1,223,800 awarded to 17 Indiana organizations

17 CHARITIES RECEIVE $ 1,223,800 IN GRANTS

(Indianapolis) –The Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust awarded $1,223,800 to 17 Indiana nonprofit organizations Wednesday, July 27. Grant recipients gathered at WFYI Indianapolis, 1630 N. Meridian Street at 4:00 p.m. for a reception with the Trust’s Trustees, staff and representatives from grantee organizations before viewing the premiere of Nina Mason Pulliam, Her Life, Her Legacy, a new documentary showcasing Nina Mason Pulliam’s life and contribution to the citizens of Indiana. WFYI 1 will air the documentary on July 28 at 7:30 p.m.

“During her lifetime, Nina Mason Pulliam dedicated her assets and business expertise to organizations helping people in need, protecting animals and nature, and enriching community life in her hometown of Indianapolis,” said Frank E. Russell, Trustee chairman.

“The Trust is pleased to continue to build on its legacy of community grantmaking through the wonderful work of the Trust family of grantees,” said Harriet M. Ivey, Trust president and CEO. “And, of the 17 organizations receiving funding, one is a first-time Trust grant recipients.” Ivey added.

“Nina spent a lifetime helping others, and her Trust has evolved into a strong resource for nonprofit groups in Indianapolis. With a strong emphasis on encouraging self-sufficiency, the Trust serves individuals, including the elderly and disabled, women, children and their
families,” Trustee Carol P. Schilling said. The Trust recognized 13 organizations helping people in need with grant commitments of $783,800.

In addition to awarding grants totaling $1,223,800 to 17 nonprofit organizations participating in the Trust’s second round of funding this year, the Trust’s Summer Youth Program contributed $125,000 to 18 organizations that provide academic enrichment, arts and recreational summer programs for children of low-income families.

“Nina was known for her love of animals and was concerned for their welfare. Throughout her life, she supported efforts to protect animals of all kinds, as well as their habitats and the natural beauty of Indiana,” said Trustee Nancy M. Russell. The Trust awarded $410,000 to three organizations protecting animals and nature.

Twyman, Ph.D., Indiana grants programs director for the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust.

Since the Trust began its grantmaking in 1998, it has awarded more than $93 million to 430 Indiana nonprofit organizations.
