President's Message

Dear Connections Readers,

Welcome to this special edition of Connections introducing the Trust's 2011 annual report and our refreshed website, We will announce the availability of audited financial statements later this spring.

2011 was a very busy and productive year in all aspects. Here are some highlights.

The Trust:

- Awarded more than $14 million in grants, the second largest amount since 2008.
- Distributed grants equally between Arizona and Indiana nonprofit organizations.
- Again awarded the largest amount of funding to Helping People in Need granteees while grants for Protecting Animals and Nature grew significantly.
- Worked more closely with grantees to establish greater impact, especially to assist families and individuals achieve financial and social self-sufficiency. This began last summer with the announcement of changes in our competitive grant cycle, moving from three to two rounds to provide more time to work with potential applicants.
- Leveraged grants through community collaborations in Indianapolis and Phoenix to organizations that provide basic services to those struggling to gain financial stability.
- Celebrated 47 Nina Scholars graduates, the largest number in the program's history.
- Announced in December, the retirement of founding Trustees Frank and Nancy Russell and the appoiontment of their successors, Kent E. Agness and Lisa Shover Kackley.
