Welcome
to Connections!
Dear Indiana Connections Readers,
Welcome to the fall edition of Connections. Today we announce the Trust's third and final round of 2010 grant awards of $1,950,850 to 25 Indiana organizations. The largest portion, $1,420,850, went to 22 organizations assisting families in crisis, supporting housing and employment programs, enhancing healthcare services, and providing educational opportunities for youth. The Trust awarded the remaining $530,000 to three environmental organizations to strengthen efforts to preserve land and improve the quality of Indiana's waterways.
.For the entirety of 2010, the Trust has awarded $5.5 million to benefit Indiana residents. These 101 grant awards exemplify the Trust's commitment of responding to alleviate immediate needs, collaborating to leverage organizational impact and investing over the longer horizon to change lives, preserve environments and enrich community life in Indianapolis. This has been the Trust's multipronged strategy for the past two years in response to the difficult economic times Hoosiers have been experiencing. This year 30 percent of the funds the Trust has awarded went to provide basic needs to families and individuals deeply impacted by the recession. Another 37 percent was targeted to programs for women, children, youth and families.
.As we are about to enter into the holiday season, we are very aware that many families remain in jeopardy of losing hope for a better future. Early in 2011, we will be reviewing the lessons learned over the past two years in providing emergency assistance combined with longer term efforts to build promising futures, such as what the Trust's Nina Scholars program has offered for the past 10 years. Since its beginning in 2001, more than 172 Hoosiers have or are currently benefitting from this Trust supported scholarship program at IUPUI and Ivy Tech-Central Indiana. We were especially proud that Michael Rice, a second-year Nina Scholar at Ivy Tech, was one of only 10 community college students from across the country that the White House invited to participate in its recent community college summit. Michael participated along with Ivy Tech President Thomas Snyder. Congratulations to Michael, President Snyder and Ivy Tech!
