Welcome
to Connections!
Summer 2009
Dear Indiana Connections Readers,
The summer has been very busy for the Trust, beginning with the June board meeting in Indianapolis during which the Trustees approved $1.4 million in grants to 26 Indiana nonprofit organizations. This action brought the total of grants awarded this year in Indiana to $4.43 million, including previously announced emergency funding initiatives and Summer Youth Program Fund grants. The 2009 grants budget for both Arizona and Indiana is $14.3 million.
Executive and board leadership of the 2009 2nd Round grant recipient organizations recently gathered at a Trust-hosted reception at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. Overall, Americans seem cautiously optimistic that the economy is starting to rebound and the investment markets have been inching upward over the past quarter. However, the reality is that the jobless rate continues to rise. In Indiana, it remains above the national average and is twice as high as what it was in the state a year ago. Therefore, the Trust remains committed to targeting the majority of its grants to helping families and individuals whose livelihoods continue to be most affected by the ongoing economic recession.
Also in July, the Trust held its annual welcome luncheon for the ninth cohort of 19 new Nina Scholars who will begin their studies as Nina Scholars at IUPUI and Ivy Tech-Central Indiana campus later this summer. This year’s new Indiana cohort members include 10 women and 9 men who range in age from 17 to 48 years. They will join 69 continuing Nina Scholars at these two schools.
The Nina Scholars program seeks to increase the likelihood for long-term financial and family stability for lower income nontraditional students, most of whom are the first in their families to attend college. Since initiating the program in 2001, 56 Indiana Nina Scholars have earned their associate and bachelor degrees. The commitment of the Nina Scholars is truly inspirational.
In addition to reading more about 2nd Round Trust grantees, the following link will take you directly to the Trust’s audited financial statements for 2008 and 2007. (In April when we published our 2008 annual report online, we indicated that we would announce availability of the auditor’s report on the Trust’s web site as soon as it became available.) The web site also includes information about similar Trust activities that took place in Phoenix, Arizona, last month, as well as the Trust’s previous announcements of its emergency grant initiatives in Indianapolis and Phoenix.
As
always, we welcome your comments and ideas for Connections. |
