Dear Indiana Connections Readers,
Welcome to this summer edition announcing the Trust's second round of grants for 2010 in Indiana, totaling $945,000 to 17 nonprofit organizations. While indicators show that Indiana's economy is slowly reawakening, the nonprofit organizations that provide the basic necessities of life to families and individuals are experiencing more financial stress than a year ago. This is due to further significant cuts in state and local government contracts for services and reduced donations from the public, compounded by increasing requests for assistance from current clients as well as from those who have never before asked for help.
Thus far in 2010, the Trust has dedicated 85 percent of the $2.8 million it has awarded in Indiana to its Helping People in Need program category. In response to these challenging times, the Trust has remained steadfast in its outreach and support of organizations on the front line. The grants we distributed this round again represent the Trust's priority of responding to immediate human needs, collaborating to leverage organizational impact and investing over the longer horizon to change lives, preserve the environment and enrich community life.
Other recent activities included a Trustee-hosted welcome luncheon for the 10th cohort of Nina Scholars at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. This new cohort of nontraditional students consists of six at Ivy Tech-Central Indiana Campus and five at IUPUI. They will be part of a total of 76 Nina Scholars enrolled for the upcoming fall semester. We also are please that for nine years, the Indiana Nina Scholars have a combined graduation and persistence rate of 63 percent; 55 percent for Ivy Tech Scholars and 72 percent for IUPUI Scholars.
