Welcome
to Connections!
Dear
Readers,
What some may describe as lazy summer months, translated to anything but “lazy” for the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust as we continue 10th anniversary grantmaking activities.
We recently distributed the Trust’s 2007 annual report that also provides a glimpse into the accomplishments of a selection of Trust grantee organizations from the first decade. Common to all featured organizations is the impact of the Trust’s support told from the perspective of each organization’s leadership. Growth, stability and strengthening of their missions are common themes.
For an online look at the annual report, visit our redesigned web site at ninapulliamtrust.org. The web site incorporates more streamlined navigation of the most updated Trust information, as well as provides historical grantmaking information. We welcome your feedback as you experience our significantly revised site.
July continues to be a favorite month for all of us at the Trust. We welcomed the 8th cohort of 42 Nina Scholars who will begin their classes this month and congratulated the May graduates at luncheons at the Heard Museum in Phoenix and the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indianapolis. Since the Trust established the Nina Mason Pulliam Legacy Scholars program in 2001, it has funded 326 scholarships and produced 92 graduates. Based upon conservative estimates, the realization of a college degree for these nontraditional students creates a $557,000 premium for each graduate’s career earning potential.
A formal evaluation study of the program’s first six years found that the Trust’s scholarship, along with the living allowance, the on-campus support services and supportive cohort environment have resulted in graduation rates far exceeding those of the full student bodies of all four participating colleges. Nina Scholars persevere, not only over their college counterparts, but also over the challenging circumstances of their lives. They are truly inspiring!
The Trust also distributed its second round of grants for the year. Since the Trust began its grantmaking in 1998, it has awarded more than $148 million to 733 different nonprofit organizations. Please join me in congratulating the Trust’s most recent 46 grant recipients that received $3.71 million. Of special note, 11 organizations were first-time grant recipients.
As
always, we welcome your comments and ideas for Connections.
