Welcome
to Connections!
Dear
Readers,
2008
marks the 10th anniversary of grantmaking for the Nina Mason Pulliam
Charitable Trust. Over the past decade the Trust has been building
a legacy of community through the $144 million in grants it has
awarded to more than 700 different not-for-profit organizations
in Arizona and Indiana, primarily in metropolitan Phoenix and Indianapolis.
The
Trust recently distributed its first grant awards for 2008 to 37
organizations at receptions held in Phoenix and Indianapolis. Nine
organizations are new to the Trust family.
For
the first time, the Trust's funding to organizations working to
improve the environment and educate people, especially youth, received
the majority of the $4,304,000 the Trust awarded in this first of
three funding rounds. Environmental grant highlights include:
$500,000 to the Arizona chapter of The Nature Conservancy for the
Arizona Great Rivers Program to advance protection of local tributaries
of the Colorado River and the lower San Pedro River in southern
Arizona.
$550,000 to Marian College of Indianapolis for continued
development of the wetlands EcoLab, which receives more than 1,000
visitors, primarily youth, annually, and serves as a teacher-training
site. This is third grant the Trust has provided to Marian College
for the Ecolab since its inception in 2000.
Overall,
the grant awards range from $10,000 to $550,000 and provide operating
support for less established organizations, fund projects, and respond
to building and equipment needs. The Trust will distribute $16 million
in grants in 2008.
Future
issues of Connections will reflect on the Trust's first decade as
well as what could shape the next 10 years of the Trust's life in
building a legacy a community in Indianapolis and Phoenix.
As
always, we welcome your comments and ideas for Connections.
