Help Us Share the Dream of a College Education

The Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust is seeking applicants for its signature scholarship program that, according to Trustee Nancy M. Russell, "brings the dream of a college education to candidates who face many life challenges and are typically overlooked by college scholarship programs."

The 42 new undergraduate scholarship recipients will comprise the eighth cohort of Nina Scholars: 7 at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis; 12 at Ivy Tech Community College-Central Indiana; 15 at Maricopa Community Colleges; and 8 at Arizona State University.

Nina Scholars represent three groups of nontraditional students whom mainstream scholarship programs bypass. Nina Scholars are 25 years or older with dependents living in the household, college-age students and adults with physical disabilities, or college-age youth who were raised in the child welfare system and are self-supporting. The application deadline is April 1.

The Nina Scholars program provides full tuition, an annual $2,750 living allowance for each Scholar, books, and class fees. It also covers the program's administrative cost and funding of a full-time Nina Scholar coordinator at each school who provides counseling and assistance to the students.

"Nina would have been so pleased about the Nina Mason Pulliam Legacy Scholars program because it provides people with the means for self-sufficiency through education. This was one of Nina's fundamental beliefs," Trustee Nancy Russell explained. "The Nina Scholars program is a resounding success and fills a previously unmet need. It is the first program in the country to identify and specifically serve a population whom traditional college scholarships do not typically assist. We are particularly pleased that many of our Scholars have been referred to the program by organizations that have received Trust grants," Russell added.

I am pleased to share with you that the Council for Resource Development honored the Trust's signature program, the Nina Mason Pulliam Legacy Scholars, at its national conference in Washington, D.C. last November.

The annual CRD Benefactor Award recognizes individuals, foundations, or businesses/corporations for outstanding contributions to community colleges and embodies the ideals of philanthropy, leadership, and volunteerism in the service of community, technical, and junior colleges. The Trust appreciates the collaboration of its grantee partners at Maricopa Community Colleges and Ivy Tech who nominated the Trust for this honor.

Since the Nina Scholars program began in 2001, it has touched the lives of more than 280 men and women who are changing their lives, and the lives of their families, through education. In addition, we have celebrated the graduation of 76 Nina Scholars. In 2006, the Trustees approved the allocation of an additional $7.8 million to extend the annual recruitment of new cohorts through 2010, which will fund additional four- to six-year scholarships for up to 168 individuals.
