The Power of Storytelling
Members of the Arizona nonprofit and philanthropic community recently joined the Trust for The Power of Storytelling: A Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust Learning Event.
This event highlighted innovations in media and storytelling, imparted guidance for interacting with members of Arizona’s news media and provided tips for improved storytelling through effective media relations and social media strategy.

Liz Warren, Keynote Speaker
South Mountain Community College Storytelling Institute
Liz Warren, a fourth-generation Arizonan, is the director and one of the founders of the South Mountain Community College Storytelling Institute in Phoenix. The Institute received the Maricopa Community Colleges 2016 Diversity Award and the 2014 New Times Best of Phoenix award for Best Place to Learn to Tell Tales. Her textbook, “The Oral Tradition Today: An Introduction to the Art of Storytelling,” is used at colleges around the nation. Her recorded version of “The Story of the Grail” received a Parents’ Choice Recommended Award and a Storytelling World Award. She serves as storytelling coach for USA Today Network’s national Storytellers Project.
She is the author of two publications created for Vitalyst Health Foundation: a policy brief, “Storytelling as a Catalyst for Systems Change,” and a workbook “Storytelling for Resident Leaders.”

Carley Kintz has spent her career in digital marketing, leveraging data, technology and empathy to create stories and experiences that resonate with the audiences she’s trying to engage. In her role as vice president of strategy and operations at Lucid Agency, she develops integrated marketing strategies and thoughtful solutions for clients such as the Better Business Bureau, Brookfield Residential, Greater Phoenix Economic Council, Gonzaga University, Foothills Sports Medicine Physical Therapy, Inspirada and others. She advocates for a consumer-first approach, focusing on personalization, creating value at every touchpoint and striving for continuous improvement along the way. Through her consultative methodology and transparent communication, she’s built trust with her clients, partners and team members, which translated to tremendous results over the years.
She earned her B.S. in communications from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, as well as her M.S. in internet marketing from Full Sail University in Florida.

Al Macias is the news director at KJZZ, where he oversees reporters, editors and producers in Arizona and two bureaus in Mexico. During his tenure at KJZZ, Macias served as Fronteras managing editor. Prior to KJZZ, Macias was communications director for Maricopa County. He began his career in media as a general assignment reporter at KTVK TV and previously worked as news manager for KNXV TV and KPNX TV. Macias is a Silver Circle member of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and is a member of the Arizona Latino Media Association, where he was a founding board member. Macias received Regional Emmy awards for breaking news coverage and government programming.
He received a Bachelor of Science in journalism from Arizona State University.
Matt Wendt, Executive Producer
KPNX-TV 12 News
Matt Wendt is a 1997 graduate of the William Allen White School of Journalism at the University of Kansas. He’s been “producing” his entire career – first at WIBW-TV in Topeka, then at KTNV-TV in Las Vegas, and he’s about to celebrate his 20th year at KPNX-TV 12 News here in Phoenix. He’s produced every newscast at 12 News but has also been trusted to lead the station in breaking news coverage, election night coverage, and he’s helped develop new programs over the years. His work has been recognized with one national Emmy Award nomination for breaking news coverage of the violence that broke out during a President Donald Trump rally in downtown Phoenix, seven Regional Emmy Award wins, an Edward R. Murrow Award for breaking news coverage and first place Associated Press Award for best special programming in 2018 for the Phoenix mayoral debate. He’s currently the dayside executive producer at 12 News.

Andrea Tyler Evans is the publisher of Frontdoors Magazine – a publication company dedicated to celebrating the people and groups who give generously and work to build the future of our community. Frontdoors content is delivered through several platforms, including Frontdoors Magazine each month, The Knock newsletter each week, FrontdoorsTV with Carey Pena and the annual Tax Credit Giving Guide.
Prior to the acquisition of Frontdoors, Evans was the principal of event planning for Evans Communications. She launched her event consulting business in September 2003, following a successful career as the event planner for two of the Valley’s largest nonprofit agencies. She has served as a political fundraising expert, with a distinguished list of clients on the local, statewide and national level.
Evans is a proud Arizona State University alumni and a graduate of Valley Leadership Institute. She volunteers with nonprofit organizations that help women, children and the arts in our community. She is married to Tom Evans and mom to Thomas, Ellie and their rescue kitty, Sally.
Mark Phillips, Political Editor
KNXV-TV ABC 15
Mark Phillips has served as the political editor for ABC 15, KNXV-TV since December 2018. He is responsible for creating content, reporting and developing a political brand for the station. Phillips focuses on developing unique content that captures audiences while growing the skills of those around him and transforming ideas into great products. During his television news career, Phillips worked as a reporter, executive producer and news manager in Arizona, Chicago and Louisiana. He earned multiple awards including the duPont Award for Investigative Journalism, Gannet Award for Innovation and two Emmy Awards. He also oversaw coverage for Nelson Mandela’s visit to Chicago.
Phillips earned his bachelor’s in communications from Loyola University. He also completed graduate courses in political science at Tulane University in New Orleans.
Kim Covington, Panel Moderator

Kim Covington is Senior Director of Community Initiatives at the Arizona Community Foundation, where she works to amplify ACF’s presence in diverse communities across the state by creating innovative and community collaborations with existing and new partners. From leading the Philanthropy for All initiative or convening the community to converse about social justice issues in the Courage to Listen, Learn and Act sessions, Covington and ACF believe there is power in partnerships, shared passion and pooled resources.
Covington retired from TV news after 30 years, including a stent at KPNX 12 News as a news anchor and education reporter. She is the recipient of four Emmy Awards for excellence in reporting and several Associated Press awards. She recently was named the recipient of the 2020 Town of Paradise Valley Martin Luther King Diversity Award. She serves on multiple boards and committees throughout the Valley. In her spare time, she enjoys hosting, voice-over work and other performing arts through her business, The Covington Companies. A wife and mother of two, Covington is a graduate of University of Missouri-Columbia Journalism School.
